1928 Packard Model 5-26 Rumble-Seat Coupe

The Fifth Series Packard Six was introduced in July 1927 as a 1928 model and represents the final year of Packard’s six-cylinder production until its return in 1937. Riding on the shorter 126-inch wheelbase, the rumble-seat coupe was one of the most promoted and stylish body styles in Packard’s 1928 advertising.

Power is supplied by Packard’s 288.6 cubic-inch L-head straight six producing 81 horsepower. By 1928, the engine featured an oil filter, and four engine mounts for improved smoothness and durability. The Single Six was positioned as the more accessible Packard, yet it remained a finely engineered and substantial motorcar.

This car was acquired from an Arizona estate where it had been sitting for some time. The engine had previously been rebuilt and is accompanied by documentation.  Still digging on history.

Since acquisition, the following work has been completed:

* Fuel tank drained and fuel system serviced
* Carburetor serviced
* Radiator professionally re-cored
* Generator rebuilt
* Fluids changed throughout

The car starts easily, runs well, and exhibits excellent oil pressure.

The paint presents very nicely and shows well. Chrome and brightwork are attractive. Wheels are finished properly and present well. Tires are older but visually in good condition.

The interior is finished in incorrect vinyl but remains clean and very presentable.

This Packard is a strong, usable driver that will benefit from continued refinement. The charging system should be verified once the generator returns from service, and the headlight switch and overall lighting system will require attention. The fuel gauge needs rebuilding, and while the car is currently operating on an electric fuel pump which is pushing too much pressure to the carburetor, rebuilding the original vacuum fuel system with proper lines is recommended. The column throttle linkage is missing and the horn is inoperative. Additionally, some trunk rack and driver’s door hardware are absent, the driver’s door window surround requires paint, the brakes should be adjusted, and the speedometer will need repair and its missing its shocks.

This is an attractive Fifth Series Packard in a highly desirable rumble-seat coupe configuration with a documented rebuilt engine and strong overall presentation. It is not a concours restoration, but a solid, honest motorcar offering an excellent foundation for further refinement or enjoyment as a classic American driver.
